  • Restaurante Botín (C. de Cuchilleros, 17): Founded in 1725, this is the oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness World Records. Specialises in roast meats. More than a restaurant, it is a gastronomic museum.
  • Casa Ciriaco (C. Mayor, 84): Another bistro-museum in the heart of the city centre, a must if you want to enjoy the local cuisine of Madrid. You can try typical dishes such as callos a la madrileña (tripe), pochas estofadas con perdiz (stewed beans with partridge), mollejas de cordero al ajillo (lamb sweetbreads with garlic), cocido madrileño (chickpea stew), arroz con perdiz y verduras (rice with partridge and vegetables), among others. It is the perfect choice for this type of cuisine.
  • Casa Lucio (C. de la Cava Baja, 35): Following on from the previous two recommendations, this classic establishment in the capital is a must for its famous huevos estrellados (fried eggs).
  • Casa Labra (C. de Tetuán, 12): A tapería with a lot of history. Don’t miss the tajadas de bacalao (battered cod) and the croquetas de bacalao (cod croquettes).
  • Churrería San Ginés (Pasadizo de San Ginés, 5): There are few things more Madrilenian than eating churros with chocolate at this churrería, located on the street of the same name.
  • Lhardy (Cra de S. Jerónimo, 8): Splendour of Spanish haute cuisine with more than 180 years of prominence in the life of Madrid. Their gourmet stew is a must.
  • La Bola (C. de la Bola, 5): Another classic, its famous cocido a tres vuelcos (stew served in three courses) is part of the history of this city.
  • La Casa de los Minutejos (C. de Antonio de Leyva, 19): Our favourite in this section. A classic located very close to Madrid Río, near the metro stop Marqués de Vadillo. It has an addictive sandwich with the same name as the restaurant. If you like ear, this is the place for you.

  • Asador Avelino (C. de Joaquín Turina, 42): 15-20 minutes by public transport from the city centre, in the traditional neighbourhood of Carabanchel, we find this grill restaurant, which is not to be missed if you like suckling pig or lamb.
  • El Pedrusco de Aldealcorvo (C. de Juan de Austria, 27): Incredible family restaurant in the central Iglesia neighbourhood, where you can sample lots of Spanish cuisine with just the right touch of creativity, in addition to its fabulous roast meats.
  • Casa Julián de Tolosa: Authentic Basque restaurant in the heart of La Latina.
  • El Cogollo de la Descarga (C. de las Hileras, 6): Along with Asador Avelino, our personal favourite on this list. A very authentic Asturian restaurant, with excellent value for money and very close to the Plaza Mayor and the San Miguel Market.
  • Restaurante Cadaqués Madrid (C. de Jorge Juan, 35): Cosy restaurant with a Mediterranean atmosphere where you can enjoy some of the best wood-fired rice dishes. Located on Calle de Jorge Juan.
  • La Casa del Pulpo (C. de Almendrales, 17): Also near Madrid Río, in the traditional Usera neighbourhood, easily accessible by public transport from the city centre. This traditional establishment, run by several generations of the same family, shows the utmost respect for the product and the traditional way in which it is prepared.
  • Castelados (C. de Antonio Acuña, 18): As with the previous restaurant, Castelados also respects generational management, making it a benchmark of tradition and flavour in Spanish gastronomy. Located a few metres from Retiro Park.

  • Rasputín Russian) (C. de Yeseros, 2, Centro): This is perhaps the least familiar type of cuisine, which is why we have included it as one of the must-visits. With an unbeatable location, you’ll know why it’s on this list as soon as you enter.
  • Fiaschetteria La Saletta (Italian) (C. de Sta. Isabel, 5, Centro): Unbeatable for a good time. The food is incredibly authentic and is located in the Antón Martín Culinary Market.
  • Piscomar Cevichería by Jhosef Arias (Peruvian) (Carrera de San Francisco, 15, Centro): Modern and avant-garde classic Peruvian cevichería in an unbeatable location in Madrid.
  • Miyama (Japanese) (C. de la Flor Baja, 5, Centro): Very close to Gran Vía, classic Japanese, an experience that will take you 100% back to the roots of Japanese cuisine.

  • Artesa Pizzería (P.º de Juan Antonio Vallejo-Nájera Botas, 25, Arganzuela): Located in Pasillo Verde, near Madrid Río. A restaurant with a very special menu where you can enjoy original pizzas at an affordable price. Worth a visit.
  • Taberna La Española (C. de Pérez Galdós, 7): Located on one of the capital’s most emblematic streets. Its variety of tapas, appetizers and traditional dishes, with prices that seem to come from a bygone era, make this place worthy of inclusion in this category.
  • Restaurante El Bierzo (C. de Barbieri, 16, Centro): Our personal choice in this category. Located on Calle Barbieri, in the heart of the Chueca district, this restaurant has been in business for generations, opening in 1971. The product and respect for traditional stews are unquestionable, at a price that is impossible to beat.
  • Vinitus (Gran Vía, 4, Centro): Elaborate and very tasty tapas on the famous Gran Vía. The prices are, in our opinion, more than competitive for the preparation of tapas and the location of the restaurant.
  • Cervecería La Campana (C. de Botoneras, 6, Centro): This could also be in the Madrid Classics section, but we’re including it here because of the quality/price ratio, especially the bocadillo de calamares (squid sandwich) (a must if you haven’t tried it).
  • Bar Melo ‘s Lavapiés (C. del Ave María, 44, Centro): Another classic not to be missed. Their famous “zapatillas” sandwich will make you understand why we recommend this place.
